As you write your response to the readings, keep practicing writing strong paragraphs. What is new about the type of collective action he describes, and the way the groups are formed? What other examples (perhaps from your own experience) can you think of besides the ones he uses here? I encourage you to tie his ideas together with any other readings we’ve done so far that you think are relevant to this discussion. Toward the end of the second chapter, Shirky poses two questions: “Why has group action largely been limited to formal organizations? What is happening now to change that?” His answer to those questions is sketched out in these two chapters. Assignment: Our reading this time is two chapters from Clay Shirky’s book Here Comes Everybody, in which he looks at how new technologies are changing the way that groups form as well as what they can accomplish. ![]()
