The author brings the plight of these people into vivid sight and pulls at the empathy we have in our hearts for those who are losing their lives as well as their livelihood. ![]() Fires are destroying millions of acres of forests while migrant workers are experiencing the same kind of prejudice as the traveling workers of the Depression. Weather extremes are killing crops in the Midwest, while people’s homes are being threatened by an increase in flooding along our coasts. In many ways, we are seeing some of the same issues playing out now. In Texas, Elsa Martinelli is forced to choose between fighting for her land against all costs or seeking new answers in the state of California. In the midst of economic chaos, the Dust Bowl simply increases the devastation on American farms. ![]() In The Four Winds, she turns her attention to the plight of folks caught up in the Great Depression and bids us try to understand what it was like to live without a safety net or even hope. ![]() The shear beauty of Kristin Hannah’s narratives is only matched by her well-crafted storylines and realistic, believable characters. ![]()
